ASK ROOFER >>ROOF SHINGS COST

Is Shingle Roofing Cheaper than Tile?

Palm Beach County and South Florida is "Roofing Central" and owing to the fact that almost 80% of roofs in the area are tile, we could be called the tile capital of United States. Over the years, as the economy has deteriorated, many homeowners have chosen to reroof their homes with shingles instead of replacing their roof with tile. Until recently, this is been a way to save a significant amount of money on roof replacement costs. And with the variety of shingle choices available today, the transition from tile to shingle hasn’t meant a significant decrease in the aesthetics of the home. More recently, due to the cost of petroleum, what shingles are made of, shingle prices have started to creep up and today they stand even with and sometimes more expensive than tile.

Does this mean that opting for a tile roof is cheaper than installing a shingle roof? No, not necessarily. While the shingles may be slightly more expensive, they are less expensive to install, saving homeowners on the cost of labor. Less preparation of the underlayment (the layer between the outer roofing material and plywood deck) means less cost. The degree to which a homeowner will save money really depends on the quality and style of tile or shingle they choose. In both cases, styles and costs can vary wildly.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to reroof your home with tile or shingle is up to you. The most important part of that decision is finding the right contractor for your particular property.
